Plant Protein One of the most common misconceptions about plant-based diets is that they are lacking in protein. This is completely untrue, as plant-based proteins can provide some incredible health benefits. We speak elsewhere in this issue about soy protein, which is one of the most prevalent protein sources for the world’s population, but people choose plant-based proteins for a number of reasons. Contributing factors such as sustainability, the rise in food intolerances and allergies, ethics, and a lean towards proactive approaches to health and wellbeing by consumers has led to strong growth of plant proteins in modern diets. Protein sources such as pea, which packs a lot of bang-for-the-buck, is often augmented with a source like quinoa, which contains all 9 essential amino acids – making for a potent combination. The fibrous nature of plants makes it tougher for the body to break down plant proteins, but this same quality can be beneficial when it comes to things like heart health or blood sugar management.
