Nutrition Quarterly Winter 2023

I worked for a big box gym chain in the early 2000’s and loved helping clients make progress toward their individual goals. It was so gratifying to me to watch a client gain self- esteem as they started to get stronger and feel better about themselves. Working in the corporate environment became quite stagnate after a while so I decided to open my own single operator personal training studio in late 2006. I was introduced to Performance Food Centers through a mutual business contact and I saw the opportunity in adding the private label protein. It was a great value add to our clientele and it gave us an edge as it was branded by us and recommended to our members. The PLP was such a big hit both in taste and results, it was a natural progression to upgrade to a full service smoothie bar. Nutritional education has always been central to helping our clients improve the health, speed and function of their metabolism. Exercise, and strength training in particular, initiates the repair and recovery process in our body which is essential to keeping our metabolism functioning at its highest level. The only way to ensure our body properly utilizes that repair and recovery phase is by having easily absorbable protein immediately after the workout. This is where having an integrated smoothie bar really excels with our personal training business model. We are able to educate our clients on how important it is to have a recovery smoothie right after they exercise. I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 21 years (hard to believe it’s been that long). I was in school to become a paramedic and decided to switch careers and focus on fitness because of the major transformation it had on me as a young adult.
