Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Traditionally a time for harvest and reflection, it’s a time when we can take stock of our own growth and enjoy the bounty of all our hard work. Apples, pumpkins and chai are quintessential Autumn favorites, at least in my home! I include them in my pies (yes, I do make pies — and really good ones I might add) muffins, pancakes, smoothies and hot beverages. You name it, I find ways of incorporating these and many more flavors of the season into my foods. Beyond their exquisite taste, their nutritional content is powerful! You see, you really can have your cake and eat it too! If you are like most people, you may associate these Fall flavors with high sugar, high calorie decadent treats. You would be right, but these treats can still be a benefit to your diet. Though often demonized for their added sugar, holiday treats do have their place on your table and as part of a healthy diet. My goal is to help you relax and enjoy the bounty of the season and also to learn how to use your favorite ingredients to boost flavor as well as nutritional value. In this issue, we’ll be talking about sugar — how to make better choices in general and how to use sugar responsibly (like for post- workout recovery) so now you can have that slice pumpkin pie and not feel guilty!
